Ingredients of dog teeth cleaning products

I researched all ingredients, manufacture recall information and customer reviews on products listed below. I found only 4 (including Leba III dental spray) products which could be considered natural products. The rest are made from variety of chemical compounds. This is summarized for you below. I hope you will find it helpful.

PetzLife Oral Care Spray Ingredients

water, ethyl alcohol, grapefruit seed extract, grape seed extract, rosemary oil, thyme oil, neem oil, pepermint oil

PetzLifeGrapefruit Seed Extract or GSE is one of the controversial compounds in this mix. It is know to be a synthetic chemical compound which contains chlorides (Ammonium, Benzethonium) dangerous for animal or human consumption. Studies conducted in the US and abroad report suspicious and abnormal chemical activity in numerous, randomly selected grapefruit seed extracts. PetzLife claims that GSE is safe. Since Leba III was an alternative without any GSE, I stayed away from this product.

PlaqueAttack Ingredients

Plaque Attack

water, ethyl alcohol,grapefruit seed extract, grape seed extract, rosemary oil, thyme oil, neem oil, pepermint oil

PlaqueAttack uses the same ingredients as PetzLife Oral Care and is most likely PetzLife re-branded under a different name.

Proden PlaqueOff Ingredients

ascophyllum nodosum

Proden PlaqueOff
This was an interesting product which was made purely from seaweed (ascophyllum nodosum) and distributed as a supplement in powder or tablet form. The product impacts plaque through the bloodstream and the saliva. It was used by humans before it was made for pets. My concern was related to fact that you were still asked to brush the pet’s teeth to remove softened plaque, whereas Leba III will remove plaque without brushing. This product is likely to be my alternative to Leba III.

Oxyfresh Pet Oral Hygene Solution Ingredients

chlorine dioxide, zinc acetate, sodium citrate, chlorophyllin, sodium benzoate, sodium hydroxide, citric acid

Oxyfresh Pet Oral Hygene Solution
chlorine dioxide – This is a compound that has been know to cause death to animals in large doses as well as being a severe respiratory and eye irritant;
sodium citrate – This compound has also been know to cause death of animals when ingested with food;
sodium benzoate – This is known to lead to cancer in humans and animals;
Some of the compounds used in the chemical composition of the solution seem a bit bizarre since it is suggested as additive to drinking water. This one was definitely not on my list.

PlaqueBlast Ingredients

water, sodium hexametaphosphate, glycerine, sodium chlorite, disodium phosphate, sodium citrate, propylene glycol, poloxamer 407, sucralose sodium hydroxide, phosphino carboxylic acid, potassium phosphate, sodium fluoride, phosphoric acid, potassium iodide

Plaque Blast
As I was researching this product, I found references to ingredients similar to PetzLife product. Yet the manufacturer’s website listed the above ingredients instead. The components by themselves were already questionable, but it was the customer review that claimed the death of their dog was caused by this product that really made me take it off my list.

Four Paws Pet Dental Liquid Ingredients

water, citric acid, potassium sorbate, glycerin, sodium benzoate, sodium laureth sulfate, methylparaben, methyl salicylate, propylparaben, sodium borate, FD&C blue no. 1, trisodium EDTA, FD&C yellow no. 5

Four Paws Pet Dental Liquid
sodium laureth sulfate – This causes skin and eye irritation and causes mutations. This is another controversial chemical which named as one of the most dangerous ingredients in products today.
Additionally, Four Paws Dental Liquid contains sodium benzoate just as Oxyfresh does. This product has also been recalled by the manufacturer at least once due to “separation” issues. I crossed this one off my list as well.

Petrodex Dental Rinse Spray Ingredients

water, chlorhexidine gluconate, glycerin, sorbitol, flavor, methyl paraben, zinc gluconate, blue #1

Petrodex Dental Rinse
chlorhexidine qluconate (CHG) – This is an oral rinse which contains all of the above ingredients, alcohol and sodium saccharin. I’m not sure why manufacture disclosed some of the components, but not others. Sodium saccharin is known to cause cancer to animals.
This product didn’t made the list either.

Synergy Labs Dental Fresh for Dogs and Cats Ingredients

Synergy Labs Dental Fresh

water, chlorine dioxide, sodium benzoate, organically derived chlorophyll

This is another product containing components such as chlorine dioxide and sodium benozate, which are know to harm animal and people. It didn’t made the list.

Petkin Liquid Oral Care Ingredients

Petkin Liquid Oral Care

water, sodium bicarbonate (baking soda), glycerine, zinc gluconate, cetylpyridinium chloride, aloe vera gel, potassium sorbate, methylparaben, malic acid

cetylpyridinium chloride – has several side effects for animals which may include convulsion, paralysis and depression;

Vibrac C.E.T. Aquadent Ingredients

Cet Aquadent

xylitol  – have been shown to be beneficial for plaque removal in cats. Unfortunately 2009 study published Journal of Veterinary Pharmacology and Therapeutics indicates that it could be deadly for dogs.

Vibrac C.E.T. Oral Hygiene Rinse Ingredients

CET Oral Hygiene Rinse

chlorhexidine, zinc gluconate, cetylpyridinium chloride (water, alcohol, sodium saccharin, glycerin, methyl paraben)

chlorhexidine qluconate (CHG)  – contains alcohol and sodium saccharin. Sodium saccharin is known to cause cancer to animals.

This was the last product I found related to dog dental health. Yet the ingredients made me so concerned that I took it off the list as well.
